The story
A nude Tahitian girl lies face-down on a bed while a hooded figure sits behind her — the spirit of the dead. The model was Gauguin's young companion Teha'amana. Painted in 1892, the wall is dusted with glowing specks meant to suggest the wandering souls Polynesians feared after dark.
