The Green Christ
The story
A Breton woman in traditional dress sits at the foot of a moss-green stone Christ, a black lamb cradled in her hand. Gauguin painted it in November 1889 at Pont-Aven, inspired by carved roadside crucifixes he had studied in nearby villages.
