The story
A locomotive emerges from a sun-shot cloud of steam under the great glazed roof of the Gare Saint-Lazare. Monet gives the steam and the iron architecture equal weight. One of twelve paintings he made of the station in 1877, treating the modern train shed almost like a cathedral.
