Sage Narada asks Valmiki to write the story of Rama

The divine sage Narada visits the hermit Valmiki and tells him to write down the story of Rama. This is the opening scene of the Ramayana itself, a popular subject in north Indian painting from the 17th and 18th centuries that often served as a frontispiece for illustrated Ramayana series.
