Rügen landscape with bay
The story
A quiet view of a bay on the island of Rügen, with the lagoon beyond. Painted in gouache in 1802, this is from the first of Friedrich's many walking tours of the Baltic island, where he sketched the cliffs and seascapes that shaped his later Romantic landscapes.
