The story
Sher-Gil's cousin Viola — the sister of her future husband Victor Egan — reclines in a studio interior. Painted in Budapest in 1933 while Sher-Gil was still studying in Paris, the picture shows the influence of Gauguin and the long European tradition of the reclining nude.
