Portrait of a young man

A young man in sober black, painted in Antwerp in 1528. By this point, black clothing had become a sign of bourgeois respectability across Europe. The sitter's name is lost, but the cool tones and careful handling of fabric are typical of Netherlandish portraits of the era.
