Philip IV (Philippe IV)
The story
King Philip IV of Spain stands in hunting dress. Manet etched this in 1862, copying a painting newly arrived at the Louvre and then thought to be by Velazquez. It was one of three prints he showed at the Salon of Rejects in 1863 — a sign of how deeply Spanish painting shaped him.
