The story
Three studio models caught in moments of relaxation — sitting, standing, undressing — instead of holding a pose. Seurat painted this between 1886 and 1888 as a pointed reply to critics of La Grande Jatte, using the same painstaking technique of building images out of tiny coloured dots.
