Fire at Full Moon

A glowing yellow disc hangs above an irregular red cross in a layered, darkening landscape, the shapes flashing at each other like signals. Klee painted it in the summer of 1933, the year the Nazi regime dismissed him from the Düsseldorf Academy and branded his art "degenerate."
