A Vase of Flowers

Red bougainvillea, white frangipani and tiare blossoms tumble out of a dark clay pot against a golden background. Gauguin painted it in 1896 shortly after returning to Tahiti, caring less about which flower was which than about the weave of warm reds and cool blues. Degas later bought it.
